Lagata Expands Its Natural Resources Portfolio with the Acquisition of Compagnie Minière de l’Oumjerane Mine in Morocco
January 2025
Lagata, through its subsidiary Ayrad, acquired a majority stake in Compagnie Minière de l’Oumjerane (“CMO”), located in Morocco’s Eastern Anti-Atlas region. This marks Lagata’s first investment in the country, in partnership with MANEGEM, and represents a strategic expansion into one of North Africa’s key mining hubs. Currently, the project is the second largest copper producer in Morocco.
This acquisition by a New York-based private investment fund reflects Lagata’s commitment to responsible mining, economic development, and sustainability. The group also aims to support local communities through employment generation, skills training, and empowerment initiatives focused on women and youth.
This transaction marks a strategic expansion of Lagata’s natural resources portfolio and strengthens the Group’s presence in North Africa, a region with significant geological potential and a favourable environment for long-term, responsible investment.
CMO has a long history in the region and is recognised for its resource quality, operational potential, and proximity to key export and industrial corridors. By integrating CMO into Lagata’s growing natural resources platform, the Group intends to enhance operational efficiency, unlock new development opportunities, and set a higher benchmark for responsible mining practices in the region.
Strengthening Lagata’s Natural Resources Strategy
The acquisition aligns with Lagata’s broader commitment to investing in high-impact sectors that combine economic value, sustainability, and long-term community benefits. As part of the transition, Lagata will introduce its best-practice frameworks across environmental management, safety culture, and community engagement, ensuring that CMO evolves into a model operation within Morocco’s mining landscape.
- Modernising infrastructure and production processes
- Strengthening governance and environmental compliance
- Embedding rigorous health and safety standards
A New Chapter for CMO
CMO will now undergo a full operational and strategic transformation under its existing identity. Lagata will focus on stabilising and scaling production, enhancing mine-life planning, and unlocking the broader geological potential of the license area.
The acquisition signals Lagata’s confidence in Morocco’s mining sector and the country’s supportive regulatory environment, which together offer a solid foundation for sustainable growth.
Driving Impact, Delivering Value
With this acquisition, Lagata continues to strengthen its portfolio across Sub-Saharan and North Africa, advancing its mission to develop resilient, responsible, and high-performing businesses across emerging markets.
